First Bank and Trust Team—Lubbock, TX Step Out to Fight DiabetesThe First Bank and Trust team has been involved with the Lubbock, Texas walk event for as long as anyone can remember. First Bank's CEO and Chairman, Barry Orr, first walked in 1994 in honor of his daughter, who suffers from diabetes. Since then, the event has grown into a company-wide event. Each year, employees of First Bank kick off their campaign several months before the walk with innovative fund-raising tactics to achieve their goal: jeans days, garage sales and raffles. It's a time when all employees rally together to make a difference. In 2006, Nicole Maddox, assistant bookkeeping supervisor at First Bank, took creative fund raising to a new level when she auctioned off the ability to name her unborn baby. She and her husband have a daughter, Macee, who has type 1 diabetes. As a result, they wanted to do something creative—and personal—to increase the amount of money raised. The highest bidder (ADA Executive Director Martha Atwood) provided the winning name for their new son: Aeden. Nicole attributes her team's outstanding participation to the growing incidence of diabetes and the caring environment at her workplace. "First Bank and Trust is such a great family," said Nicole. "Even if they don't personally care for someone with diabetes, they know someone who is affected by the disease." Last fall, Nicole joined more than 100 of her fellow employees for the Lubbock walk event. Together, their team raised $12,500. "Everyone at First Bank realizes how important this walk is," said Nicole. "We have to find a cure!" |
