Luke's Chargers—Findlay, OH Step Out to Fight DiabetesLucas O'Connor, 12, has a personal mission to raise awareness about diabetes and make a difference in his community. Growing up, this young Dale Earnhardt, Jr. fan had no interest in learning his ABC's—but he knew a Pontiac from a Chevy. Now, in addition to his love for driving, he has a passion for walking. When Lucas was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes shortly before his fourth birthday, he didn't know anyone else who had it—he thought he was the only one. It was hard for him to believe there were other kids out there that had diabetes, too. He is now the 2007 Youth Ambassador for his local fund-raising walk with the American Diabetes Association (ADA). He serves as a role model for other kids with diabetes, and he wants them to know that he's been through it, too. Lucas was the highest individual fund-raiser at the Findlay, Ohio walk last year. But that wasn't enough for him—this year he is forming a large team of friends and family with a much higher fund-raising goal. They are already raising money and recruiting—even his new baby brother, Owen, will be at the walk. Lucas wants his team to be called Luke's Chargers. Why? Because he is "charging diabetes head on!" Lucas is going the distance to fight diabetes this year by teaming up with his family to spread awareness in his community. The O'Connors believe that even if they can't come up with a cure, participating in ADA's walk event is one way to help. |
