Jakub's Ladder—Southeast Michigan Step Out to Fight Diabetes

According to Jakub Pope, life with diabetes has its up-sides: "you can eat whatever you want when your sugar is low, and the glucose tablets taste really good." Jakub, (who wants to make sure you know he's 8 ? years old—not 8), and his top fund-raising family and friends team, Jakub's Ladder, have just the positive attitude necessary to impact the Michigan area and the greater fight against diabetes.

Since his diagnosis at age 2, Jakub and his family have become increasingly involved with the ADA and fund raising for their area walk event. At their annual themed fund-raising party, Jakub and his family recognize friends and family for their support by giving out party favors—leis at a luau two years ago, maracas at least year's fiesta. They involve everyone in the festivities, especially Jakub, who decorates the donation box with pictures of himself doing activities while wearing his insulin pump and counts the money collected.

Jakub's involvement does not end at the finish line—he will be attending Camp MIDICHA next summer, and he is serving as his local Step Out Youth Ambassador. In his ambassador role, Jakub will be featured on local TV and radio, as well as at the event itself where he will kick off the walk for all participants.

April Pope, Jakub's mom, who has type 2 herself, is looking forward to leading Jakub's Ladder again this year. "It's not a lot of work to put a team together," she said. "But, it's a lot of fun when you do get one together, and are able to raise some money!"
