Matching Gifts
Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees. Some companies even match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses!
Here are the steps in the matching gift process:
Step One: Confirm the company you are applying with will match for Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes. Visit www.matchinggifts.com/diabetes for a list of matching gift companies or contact the company directly. You can also search for matching gift companies during the online donation process. (Our EIN number is 13-1623888.)
Step Two: The donor makes a donation (either online at diabetes.org/stepout or via mail) and then initiates the matching gift process with their company. Most matching gift companies have either a paper matching gift process or an online matching gift process. Please read the instructions below for the appropriate process.
Paper Matching Gifts Process: If a matching gift company has a paper matching gift process then the donor must obtain a matching gift form from the matching gift company and complete the donor section. It is very important that the donor designates the American Diabetes Association as the recipient of the matching gift. Please use the address of your local Association office (or call 1-888-DIABETES) to ensure proper credit.
After the donor completes the donor section of the paper matching gift form, the donor gives the matching gift form, along with their donation receipt, to the participant. Please proceed to Step Three.
Online Matching Gifts Process: If a matching gift company has an online matching gift process then the donor must complete the matching gift process through the matching gift company's database. It is very important that the donor designates the American Diabetes Association as the recipient of the matching gift. You should use the ADA National Office address in Alexandria, VA.
Important note for donors processing matching gift forms online: If the matching company has an online matching gifts process, the donor should note the name of the participant being supported and the location of that participant's event on the form (e.g., Sally Smith, Philadelphia Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes). There is typically a line titled gift designation, purpose section or notes on the online matching gift form where this information can be added. Adding this information is recommended for the appropriate participant to receive credit for the matching gift.
If the online matching gift is processed using EasyMatch, the matching company will forward the matching gift form to the American Diabetes Association directly and you can skip Step Three. If the online matching gift is processed using CyberGrants, the donor must print and mail the form to the American Diabetes Association local office. For all other types of online matching gift processes, please contact the matching company for next steps.
Step Three: Send any completed matching gift forms and/or donations to your local office. Please call 1-888-DIABETES or refer to your Welcome Packet for your local Association's address.
Step Four: It can take 2-4 weeks to process your matching gifts. Please make sure to add any matching gifts and offline donations to your Step Out Center as offline donations as they will not automatically upload. Unless specifically prohibited by your matching company, matching gifts will count toward your fundraising goal.
