THANK YOU!

Leonard Weaver at Opening

A majority of weather reports called for a vast amount of rain on Saturday, October 3rd, but luck and sun were on our side as Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes presented by Independence Blue Cross took place at the Art Museum in Philadelphia.

Over 3,500 people came out to take a stand against Diabetes, a disease that affects nearly 490,000 Philadelphians. Volunteers helped the event run smoothly by graciously donating their time to check-in walkers, hand out information on the American Diabetes Association, and cheer for walkers along the route.  One special guest at this year’s walk was Philadelphia Eagles starting fullback, Leonard Weaver, who shared motivating words to the crowds of walkers and then walked with the Barradetes, one of Step Out Philly’s top Family/Friend teams.   Also participating in the opening ceremony celebration was Lori Wilson from NBC-10, John DeBella from WMGK 102.9FM and our amazing Red Striders!!!

Reg volunteers

Hill Valley handed out sugar-free treats to walkers to boost their energy levels, and ACME donated juice and water to help wash them down.  Over 15 companies hosted a table at the Health Fest, where free samples and information on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle was distributed.

Walkers Close by the Health Fest tent, The Magic Guys and the Please Touch Museum entertained children with magic tricks and fun activities. On the steps of the Art Museum and the Washington statue, photos were taken of this year’s enthusiastic teams.  Many team members sported their custom-made t-shirts representing their unique team logo. Even some canine friends wore their teams’ t-shirt with pride!

Only a light mist of rain fell on walkers as they made the 5K journey around downtown Philadelphia. After the walk, walkers celebrated at the Art Museum with food, music & fun as another successful Step Out Philly came to a close!
