Step Out Orlando Salutes Red Strider, Caitlyn Seavers!

Thank you, Caitlyn, for sharing your inspirational story. We are honored to walk for you!

CaitlynMy name is Caitlyn Seavers. I am a twelve  year old in the seventh grade. My favorite thing to do is act. When I got diagnosed on July 16, 2013 with Type 1 diabetes, I thought I was not going to be able to still do acting. That is not true. I still do acting and having diabetes does not hold me back at all. It was been an interesting journey and a great learning experience. I learned a lot about how your lifestyle is when you have diabetes and what you have to do to stay healthy. It was really hard for me to get used to taking four shots a day. Now that I have been diagnosed with Celiac disease it is a lot harder for me. I have to make sure that I give the right amount of insulin for the right amount of carbs while also watching my gluten intake. I was really weird the first time I had to do it in front of my friends, but I got used to doing it in front of anybody at anytime I have to. I found out a lot of people that I have know have it. Once of my best friends has Type 1 Diabetes just like me. with her help, I have started a Diabetic support group at my school for the incoming sixth grade diabetics. It has been a very interesting journey, and I wonder what will happen next. My life is getting better and more interesting by the minute. I feel better and healthier! No matter what happens in the future, I am still going to pursue my dream of becoming a famous actress. My diabetes is never going to get in the way of doing what I love!

ADA Central Florida is proud to announce Daniel T. O'Keefe, Partner, Shutts & Bowen as the 2014 STEP OUT Chairman!dan headshot

Real estate attorney and Chairman of the South Florida Water Management district, Dan O’Keefe, has signed on to be Chairman of the 2014 Step Out Walk. Mr. O'Keefe, a resident of Central Florida for 34 years, is an active supporter of many charitable and business organizations. He joins the ADA’s Stop Diabetes® movement to support a personal cause—his nephew lives with diabetes.

“Diabetes is a devastating disease that has personally touched me and my family,” says O’Keefe. “Step Out is a day to support the adults and children who live with diabetes. It is also an opportunity to raise shuttsawareness and recognize our teams, walkers and sponsors, who have come together to help change the future of diabetes.”

Dan leads the STEP OUT Walk Executive Committee, including Jody Barry of Florida Hospital, Melissa Rakauskas of Walgreens, Daryl Carter of Maury L. Carter & Associates, John Crossman of Crossman & Company, Ashley Williams of Cox Media Group-Orlando, Jeff Jennings of Jennings & Sons, and Tom Harman of Universal Protection Services.

We thank them for their support!

About STEP OUT: Walk to Stop Diabetes

We Step Out to do our part to Stop Diabetes! Participants are changing the future and making a positive impact in the lives of those who are affected by diabetes.

Step Out participants are committed to walk and raise money in this inspirational event not because 26 million people in the United States have diabetes, but because they walk among us in our lives and at the event.

Once you register, you'll be given your very own web page and will have access to lots of tools to help you fundraise your Step Out Center. You'll be able to customize the page with your reason for walking, send emails to ask others to join you or donate, and even download Facebook and smart phone apps. And of course, your Step Out Specialists (ADA staff) will be here to help all along the way!
